Frequently Asked Questions About Tunes 4 the Troops
How did Tunes 4 the Troops get started?
I wanted to find a way to support our Troops. I am in a program called the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. During the summer of 2005 I was at a camp and around a lot of military personnel who had just come back from overseas. The one thing that they kept telling me was that entertainment is a need. The little entertainment they do have gets listened to so many times. It becomes repetitive or they pass it on to the other men and women. When I got to thinking I realized that entertainment is CD's, DVD's, and books on CD. I went home and gathered all of my CD's and was amazed how many I had. When my friends heard what I was doing they donated theirs. Before I knew it I had collected almost 500 CD's.
Why CD’s and DVD’s and not VHS or cassette tapes?
CD’S and DVD’s will not be affected by the incredible dust and heat encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan and Kuwait. Also, the military does not have VCR’s and tape players overseas.
Will you take burned or copied CD’s?
We do not want any copied CD’s or DVD’s due to Federal copyright laws.
What are they going to watch them on?
Most units have reinforced recreation rooms equipped with a Television and DVD player. And many have personal players as well. Similar facilities exist on ships and submarines. The MWR (Moral, Welfare, and Recreation) or the unit Chaplain often tends to the upkeep of these.
Do they really have time to watch movies and listen to music?
Even in heavy combat zones there is personal time. What better way to relax than watching a DVD or listening to some great music?
What kind of movies do they want?
Everything has been requested, if you have enjoyed it so will someone else. But the most requested movies are chick flicks J and war movies.
What is your goal? 1,000,000 CD’s and DVD’s sent by Christmas of 2010
I want to get involved with my school, civic club, church or my friends what do I need to do?
There are over 600 groups I call satellites all around the country doing just that. All you need to do is commit to gather at least 100+ items and you will get to adopt your own military unit to ship the box to. It could be someone’s unit from your home town, or a unit that has made a request from my email, see the participation page on the web site.
